Course Overview

The Solaris 10 Features for System Administrators course provides students with a look at some of the new functionality found in the Solaris 10 and Solaris 10 Update 1 Operating System (Solaris OS) regarding System Management, Dtrace, Network, and Installation features.

Audience

Students who can benefit from this course are experienced system administrators with direct experience in Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 Operating Systems.

  • Understand how and why zone partitioning is used
  • Configure zones
  • Boot zones
  • Configure resource pools
  • Configure the zone-wide resource controls
  • Establish physical memory controls using the resource capping daemon
  • Administer packages in zones
  • Identify the features of Solaris Zones Interim Solution

Module 2 - Authentication Changes

  • Identify changes to password checking
  • Identify features of Least Privilege
  • Identify changes to Kerberos

Module 3 - File System Features

  • Identify changes to UFS

Module 4 - Fault and Service Management

  • Identify features of the Fault Management Architecture (FMA)
  • Identify features of the Service Management Facility (SMF)

Module 5 - Dtrace Fundamentals

  • Describe the features of the Solaris Dynamic Tracing (DTrace) facility
  • Describe the DTrace architecture
  • List and enable probes, and create action statements and D scripts

Module 6 - Using Dtrace

  • Describe the Dtrace performance monitoring capabilities
  • Examine performance problems using the vminfo provider
  • Examine performance problems using the sysinfo provider
  • Examine performance problems using the io provider
  • Using DTrace to obtain information about system calls
  • Create D scripts that use arguments

Module 7 - Changes to Internet Protocol Features

  • Understand the IP Quality of Service (IPQoS) feature
  • Explain the FireEngine project's changes to the Solaris OS Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) stack
  • Explain the addition of TCP multi-data transmission (MDT)
  • Explain other miscellaneous changes to IP

Module 8 - NFS Changes

  • Describe NFS enhancements for Solaris 9 OS First Customer Ship (FCS)through Solaris 10 OS FCS
  • Describe the enhancements to Network File System version 4 (NFS version 4)
  • Describe NFS hardware and software requirements, dependencies, and limitations

Module 9 - Security Changes

  • Explain the Solaris OS Cryptographic Framework (SCF)
  • Understand the Hardware Accelerator for Internet Key Exchange (IKE)
  • Explain and use the Solaris IP Filter firewall

Module 10 - Other Changes to Networking

  • Describe and configure the System Management Agent (SMA)
  • Describe changes to Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)commands
  • Identify changes to routing sockets

Module 11 - Solaris 10 OS Installation

  • Describe changes to the Solaris installation media
  • Configure multiple network interfaces during installation
  • Modify disk partition tables by using a Virtual Table of Contents (VTOC)
  • Describe the support for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 2 profiles
  • Describe changes to the Solaris JumpStart software and configure, enable, and troubleshoot Solaris JumpStart

  • Describe changes to the Solaris Live Upgrade boot environment and configure, enable, and troubleshoot the Live Upgrade boot capability
