Course Overview

Increasingly, organisations are devolving responsibility for many traditional personnel tasks to line managers. This practical 1-day course provides line managers with an overview of the important elements of employment law, plus practical guidance on how to tackle issues that arise at work.

Audience

All line managers or those with supervisory responsibilities. No prior knowledge of employment law is required.

General course level - appropriate for all levels of delegates.

Before employment

  • taking up references, medicals and their significance
  • pitfalls to avoid

During employment

  • contractual issues
  • dealing with part-time, agency and fixed-term contract workers

Good working practices how to deal with:

  • discrimination race, sex, disability, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation and gender reassignment
  • harassment, bullying and violence in the workplace
  • compensation levels/equal pay

Family matters

  • maternity, paternity, adoption and parental leave, rights to flexible working

Grievances and discipline

  • what the law requires, the ACAS Code of Practice
  • understanding and applying your organisation's procedures
  • the right to be accompanied
  • what happens on appeal?

Difficult issues a practical approach

  • absenteeism/poor performers/stress/email or Internet abuse
  • misconduct in and out of work
  • how to act fairly and reasonably

Dismissal
