Course Overview

Psychology plays a key role in the design, delivery, and evaluation of training and learning. And understanding the underpinning psychological theories and behavioural models can transform the effectiveness of any training delivery and strategy. This course enables participants to experience through exercises, psychometric questionnaires and role-plays the impact of a variety of approaches to bring about individual and team behavioural change. It equips them to evaluate when and how to use such approaches in the design and delivery of their learning events.

Audience

Practising trainers and line managers who have responsibility for training/facilitating groups.Advanced level course - for those wishing to develop existing skills/knowledge to a more advanced level.

  • evaluate a range of psychological theories and models in the design and delivery of training
  • assess whether and how to incorporate these theories and models into your training practice
  • assess those training approaches that capitalise best on your natural strengths, preferences and values

  • Schutz's theory (including feedback on FIRO-B questionnaire)
  • Bion's theory
  • how can the power of group dynamics be used positively in training
  • how can the trainer guard against the negative effects of group dynamics

Models of personality

  • what is personality?
  • state versus trait theory
  • emotional intelligence
  • Cattell's trait theory
  • the psychoanalytical approach to personality
  • personality and learning
  • feedback on MBTI questionnaire; training for different learning styles
  • how can an understanding of personality help the trainer?

Day 2

The influences of different schools of psychology

  • the relationship between training and therapeutic approaches
  • behavioural theory and therapy
  • how can behavioural theory and therapy help the trainer?
  • systems theory and therapy
  • role-play of systems therapy
  • the major schools of systems therapy
  • how can systems therapy inform training?
  • what are the ethical implications?

Introduction to neuro-linguistic programming (NLP)

  • some experiments with NLP (fundamental principles, origins including Gestalt theory)
  • how NLP is currently used in training
  • how might each delegate use it?
