Course Overview

This course is designed for those who have been sub-editing for a year or more, who are comfortable with the essentials of subbing and confident in their abilities but who want to build on these skills and ensure they are following best practice.

The course is designed to help magazine and newspaper journalists ensure they are subbing to the standards of major national publications.

Course Outline

SUBBING AGAINST THE CLOCK

How to sub quickly and efficiently. You will take part in a series of timed exercises using a range of material.

COPING WITH DISASTER

It's 30 minutes to deadline and a major news story breaks. The news pages must change radically. Much that has already been subbed is being torn up. Here's how to shine in the most pressured situations.

DEALING WITH MAJOR RE-WRITES

How to cope when a great wedge of indigestible material needs to be gutted, filleted and converted into a series of individual stories, boxes and graphs.

PERFECTING YOUR FEATURES SUBBING SKILLS

How to handle the most delicate of copy. How to deal with situations where copy needs be significantly restructured but the writer's voice retained.

PERFECTING YOUR HEADLINES, STANDFIRSTS, AND CAPTIONS

You will work on improving a range of published and unpublished material.

PERFECTING LAYOUT SKILLS

You will take part in exercises addressing range of complex layout tasks. How to assess a selection of layouts and select the right one for different types of material.

THE ROLE OF THE REVISE SUB

Setting a quality control benchmark for revise subs to adhere to. How to decide when copy is not up to standard.

COACHING JUNIOR SUBS

How to mentor junior members of your team.

MEDIA LAW REFRESHER AND UPDATE

The latest legal developments affecting journalists and subs.
