Course Overview

This workshop will teach you how to plan for and set up and maintain a scalable and available WebSphere environment. It covers the workload management and failover capabilities for Web and application servers included in WebSphere V6.x Network Deployment, as well as the tools available for performance monitoring (and subsequent tuning). This includes also JVM monitoring and tuning options. The WebSphere V6 HA Manager and caching (both static and dynamic) are also covered. Sample applications used in the workshop are Trade6 and BeenThere.Proposed class content (subject to change):

This is an intermediate course for Information Technology (IT) architects, IT specialists and operations professionals. Also individuals that plan to implement and maintain a WebSphere V6.x network. IBMers, BPs, and Customers All Welcome

Skills Gained

This workshop examines how to ensure performance, scalability, and high availability for WebSphere V6.x applications. Workshop consists of approximately 40% lecture and 60% lab excerises. Please note: There are no WebSphere on z/OS and WebSphere on i5/OS specifics that are covered. Some content however applies to all platforms. The course materials address WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V6.1.

Prerequisites

You should have:

  • WebSphere Application Server V5 or V6 administration and configuration skills
  • WebSphere Studio Application Developer or IBM Rational Application Developer basics
  • Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) basics
  • Windows

Course Outline

Topic: Introduction / architecture / caching

  • Optional: WebSphere V6.1 update presentation
  • Introduction to Network Deployment architecture, topologies, Workload Manager (WLM) / failover, and HA Manager presentation
  • Introduction to the new IBM Technology for Java JVM
  • Setting up various scenarios lab: single server, horizontal and vertical scaling, adding load balancer and optionally the caching proxy. Stress testing all these configurations.
  • Configuring HA Manager policies and transaction log failover
  • Dynamic caching with Trade6: presentation and lab

Topic: WebSphere performance monitoring tools, WebSphere tuning parameters, JVM monitoring and tuning,

  • Performance Monitoring Infrastructure (PMI) and performance monitoring presentation: IBM Tivoli Performance Viewer, Request Metrics, and performance advisors
  • Rational Performance Tester introduction / lab
  • Performance monitoring lab with stress testing and performance tuning parameters
  • JVM/Garbage collection monitoring and tuning parameters
  • Introduction to application management (cross-platform, cross-enterprise view of applications): ITCAM-RTT and ITCAM-WebSphere presentation (+ maybe labs).

Topic: Development side performance monitoring tools

  • HTTP Protocol, Profiler and Page Detailer presentation
  • Profiler and Page Detailer labs
