Course Overview

This workshop presents an overview and detail of Linux performance considerations, monitoring options and tuning parameters available with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 and other Linux distributions based on the Linux kernel 2.6. Additional coverage is given to Red Hat Enterprise Linux performance and tuning options that take advantage of xSeries enhancements such as 64bit and NUMA support. The presentation introduces you to the factors influencing systems performance and the way the Linux operating system manages system resources. A number of important performance metrics that are needed to quantify system performance are also introduced.

The presentation then covers the various utilities available in Linux to measure and analyze systems performance. Finally, the presentation explores the various performance parameters and tweaks available within the Linux operating system. Each student team will have access to a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 test system throughout the workshop to work with what they have learned during the presentation.

Audience

IT Architects, IT specialists.

Skills Gained

Introduce the student to the Linux operating system and the performance monitoring tools that are available to the Linux system administrator. In addition, tuning strategy, commands, and parameters are covered. Hands-on exercises are interspersed throughout the presentation to reinforce what the student has learned during the presentation. After the workshop the student will have a solid understanding of the way the Linux kernel handles system ressources, how performance on the Linux operating system can be measured and how a Linux system can be tuned to run applications faster and more efficient.

Prerequisites

Familiarity with UNIX/Linux command line interface and commands used to display system status. A solid understanding of how computer sub-systems such as harddisk devices operate
