Course Overview This course is intended to provide a thorough understanding of Job Control Language (JCL) in the OS/390 environment. In addition to basic JCL concepts, the course will also deal with in-stream and cataloged procedures. Practicals take place throughout the course and each attendee will have a terminal. Audience IT staff who initiate batch jobs in the OS/390 environment or whose job requires an understanding of OS/390 job management. Skills Gained After completing this course each attendee should thoroughly understand and be able to use JCL and JES2 control statements. By The End Of This Course You Will Have Learned - How units of work (jobs) are identified to OS/390, together with the resources needed during execution

Prerequisites A knowledge of basic OS/390 concepts and of ISPF use, equivalent to OS/390 Appreciation and TSO & ISPF Introduction courses. Course Outline Introduction The concepts involved in understanding JCL are introduced, together with JCL statement, syntax, organisation and continuation OS/390 job control statements The fundamentals of JOB, EXEC, and DD statements are introduced Datasets - Sequential, partitioned and VSAM datasets
- the creation and use of generation data groups, catalogs and VTOCs!
Procedures - The use of procedures, including symbolic parameters and over-rides
- writing in-stream procedures!
Conditional execution The COND parameter and IF-THEN-ELSE statements Advanced JCL parameters - Parameters on the JOB, EXEC, and DD statements
- DFSMS concepts and associated JCL
- the OUTPUT statement
