Course Overview

This practical course and qualification, is administered and managed by ISEB - the Information Systems Examination Board division of the British Computer Society. This course provides you with a comprehensive understanding of business continuity management (BCM). On completion of the course, you will be able to successfully implement, manage and maintain a business continuity programme within your organisation. By understanding the processes involved in BCM, you will also be better prepared to review and audit any existing programme. The course is compatible with BS 25999 (for which we were a BSI Committee Member), the UK Government's ITIL Guides to BCM, and aligned with the Business Continuity Institute's (BCI) ten certification standards.

Audience

The course will benefit those with responsibility for implementing and maintaining a BCM programme within their own or another organisation.

  • Evaluate the impact of not being able to perform those critical activities
  • Develop, implement and manage plans, procedures and teams to protect an organisation

An introduction to business continuity management

  • The definition of BCM
  • Aligning the programme with the British Standard BS 25999
  • BCM and the requirements of ISO 27001 (formerly BS 7799)

Stage One - Initiation

  • Writing an effective business continuity policy
  • Agreeing the programme team and resources
  • Defining the terms of reference and scope of the programme

Stage Two - Requirements and strategy

  • Identifying critical activities
  • Analysing business impact
  • Identifying key risks and assessing and managing those risks
  • Defining effective business continuity strategies
  • Tendering for third party contracts
  • Establishing IT requirements

Stage Three - Implementation

  • Creating plans and procedures
  • Implementing standby arrangements
  • Managing a risk reduction programme
  • Implementing plans to manage the entire response from incident management through to recovery
  • Exercising plans and procedures to ensure they are fit for purpose

Stage Four - Operational management

  • Budgeting for BCM
  • Managing the media
  • Staff education and awareness techniques
  • Identifying the levels and types of training required
  • Monitoring and reviewing plans
  • Managing change within your organisation
  • Establishing an exercise programme (including how to exercise teams and plans)
