Course Overview

This course provides a thorough coverage of the Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME). The course provides a good mix between theory and practice with terminals available for each delegate. Prerequisites

Delegates must have a solid knowledge and understanding of the Java programming language, having completed our Java Programming course or equivalent. To sit the SCMAD exam you must already be a Sun Certified Programmer for Java 2.

  • Development: Tools available for J2ME development. The CLDC virtual machine. CLDC classes. Exceptions and error handling. Memory management and garbage collection
  • Security: Application level security, MIDlet suite security, authorisation, permissions and signing. Public Key authentication
  • Networking: The generic connection framework. HTTP, HTTPS, TCP/IP and UDP. The javax.microedition.io package
  • Application Model: Delivery, lifecycle and provisioning. MIDlet states and transitions. JAD files and manifests. Timers and background threads
  • Persistent Storage: MIDP RecordStores (adding, retrieving, modifying)
  • Push Registry: Benefits and limitations
  • MIDP User Interface: The MIDP 2.0 user interface API. Event handling, repainting. Class hierarchy. Font support.
  • MIDP Games: The MIDP game API. LayerManager, Layer, Sprite TiledLayer classes
  • Media: MMAPI tone generation. MIDP sound support, audio playback, tone generation, media flow controls, type controls, capabilities. MMAPI Datasource, Player and Manager objects.
  • Messaging: WMA API 1.1. SMS and Cell Broadcast. WMA addressing, security issues, message creation and sending.
