Course Overview

This course covers the use of the Hardware Configuration Dialog (HCD) to create and dynamically alter an I/O configuration. Delegates are invited to bring their own IOCP macros, focusing attention on their own installation.

Audience

People responsible for maintaining the I/O configuration ned in IODFs and IOCDSs at their z/OS installation.

Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of OS/390 and I/O configuration. This can be gained by attendance of either the ES15GB (z/OS Facilities) or the ES27GB (z/OS Operations) course.

Course Outline

This course covers topics to enable delegates to:

  • Navigate through the panels of HCD to perform the following functions:
  • Migrate configuration data from MVSCP/IOCP
  • Create a production IODF
  • Update a work IODF with additions, amendments and deletions
  • Specify LPAR and EMIF requirements
  • Define ESCON directors.
  • IPL using a production IODF
  • Organise the setup of IODFs in a production environment
  • Plan the introduction of dynamic reconfiguration in their installation
  • Use ancillary functions of the HCD dialogs.

Remarks

You are invited to bring your own installation's IOCP macros in order to relate them to the topics being covered. This basic class does not cover the new z990 and z890 servers or go into much detail on the different FICON topologies. This is covered in the 1 day ES98GB class (HCD for z/OS. Update for z990 and Ficon) which is normally scheduled immediately after the ES96GB class. It is suggested that anyone new to HCD should attend both classes.

Practical Work

The teaching sessions are accompanied by a substantial amount of practical work.
