Students will install Linux, configure the X Window System, and learn to navigate the Linux command-line shell. Students will also learn fundamental concepts common to Linux: the kernel, Linux file system, boot process and run levels, shell scripting, and editing text files. Students wishing to progess after this course should consider Linux courses 935 and 933. -
This course is the first step in the progression including the Linux System Administration course and Linux Networking course.The knowledge gained from this course (and the subsequent courses) combined with relevant exam specific study guide will give delegates a good grounding in preparation for a number of Linux qualifications including Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPI) level 1, Red Hat Certified Engineer Certification and Sair Linux & GNU Certification. Prerequisites Students should have 6-12 months experience with Linux. The course materials, lectures, and lab exercises are in English. To benefit fully from the instruction, students need an understanding of the English language and completion of the prerequisites. Skills Gained This courseware will provide you with the information you need to complete the following - Describe the structural components of Linux distributions.
- Describe Open Source Software and distinguish between GNU and GPL.
- Install Linux distribution(s).
- Describe how to get on-line help.
- Configure fundamental system hardware.
- Use fdisk or cfdisk to create, edit, and delete disk partitions.
- Use LILO to manage boot options.
- Boot the system, change runlevels, and shut down or reboot the system.
- Describe the Linux hierarchical file system and the role of key directories in organizing system files.
- Work effectively on the Linux command line using common shell commands, streams, pipes, filters, and redirection.
- Use shell scripting to quickly perform repetitive tasks.
- Open, edit, and save text documents using the vi editor.
