Course Overview

Citrix XenServer Enterprise Edition 4.1: Administration covers information administrators and other IT professionals need to successfully to deploy and manage XenServer Enterprise Edition 4.1 and the XenCenter management client. The course includes hands on labs where learners install and configure a virtualization server and then connect to the server with XenCenter. Students will then create a mix of Windows and Linux virtual machines. Next, students will create a XenServer resource pool and connect to remote storage. This allows students to explore advanced XenServer capabilities such as XenMotion and Automatic VM placement.

This course is intended for IT professionals, system architects and system engineers.

Skills Gained

Upon successful completion of this course, learners are able to demonstrate the following objectives:

  • Understand how the Xen hypervisor differs from other virtualization methods, and how the Xen open source project and XenServer commercial products differ.
  • Install XenServer Enterprise Edition version 4.1 and configure CPU, network and storage resources.
  • Install XenCenter.
  • Create virtual machines and templates.
  • Manage virtual machine resources and life cycle operations.
  • Configure local and remote storage.
  • Configure resource pools and move virtual machines from one server to another.
  • Identify the purpose and functionality of the xe CLI
  • Perform basic commands in the xe CLI.
  • Identify and view tools for upgrading and troubleshooting XenServer Enterprise Edition 4.1.
  • Identify sizing guidelines and best practices.

Prerequisites

Before taking this course, Citrix recommends that learners have the following:

  • A basic knowledge of the purpose and goals of virtualization technology
  • An understanding of computing architecture, including network and storage devices, device drivers and operating systems
  • Basic experience installing and administering Windows Server 2003
  • Basic experience installing and administering Linux variants
  • Intermediate knowledge of network devices and site architecture, including configuring vLANs.
  • Basic knowledge of storage terminology and technologies, including partitions, SANs, LUNs, iSCSI, and NFS and CIFS file shares
