Course Overview

This course has been classified as Business Skills.

PRINCE2 is an internationally used and respected Structured Project Management Method. However its conversion from theory to practical application is, too often, underestimated and mishandled. This course offers delegates practical guidance on how the method can be applied for maximum benefit in the commercial business environment. Presented by skilled trainers with extensive experience in the real life application of the PRINCE2 method, it includes a considerable number of practical exercises and workshops to enable the delegates to gain some real experience of using the method.

It includes the development of skills in compiling an effective Project Brief and subsequent Project Initiation Document which are the cornerstones of the method. It offers guidance in the selection of appropriate people for Project Management Team positions and the development of their role descriptions. In addition it offers practical exercises to enable the development of Project and Stage level plans using the Product-based planning technique, the composition of progress and exception reports and the creation and updating of the Business Case.

This course is fully compliant with the latest version of the PRINCE2 method, and carries the award of 22.5 Professional Development Units (PDU's) for PMI re-certification.

Course Outline

Review of the PRINCE2 Process Model

A revisitation of the philosophies on which the PRINCE2 method is built and an overview of its main processes by building up a process model

The SU Process: Starting up a Project

The all-important pre-project preparation the lack of which is, too often, the cause of project failure

Project Organisation and Stakeholders

No company will be successful without effective management - likewise no project will be successful without an effective Project Management Team

The IP Process - Initiating a Project

The Project Initiation Document is the basis against which the Project Board and the Project Manager can assess ongoing project progress, change and viability

PRINCE2 Quality Management

The setting up of an agreed Quality environment is a fundamental requirement in any project run under the PRINCE2 method

Project Documentation

No project can be effectively managed without efficient documentation and administration backed up by a Configuration Management Plan

Products and Plans

The Product-based Planning technique is a highly effective method for the production of effective plans at the Project and Stage levels. It is complemented by the use of Product Descriptions

Risk Management

All projects contain risks which need to be identified, analysed, actioned and managed if the project is to be successfully completed

Project Control Mechanisms

The PRINCE2 Method contains control mechanisms which ensure that the project is producing agreed products, meeting agreed criteria, on schedule and within budget

Project Issues and Change Control

All projects are subject to change and the management of project issues and the Change Control function is a central part of effective project management using the PRINCE2 method

The Business Case

This is the single most important Management product in a project run using the PRINCE2 method and should be kept up-to-date at all times

The CP Process - Closing a Project

All projects need to be brought to a "controlled close" covering decommissioning, hand-over and reports as well as plans for a Post Project Review
