Course Overview

All projects contain risks and the effective management of risk can have a significant impact on the success of projects. This 2-day course follows the latest edition of the APM's PRAM Guide and provides an opportunity to take the subject beyond the level of the APMP and to achieve a Level 1 Certificate in Risk Management on successful completion of the 1 hour multiple choice exam.

This course has been classified as Business Skills.

Audience

To attend this course, delegates will need the knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts of Project Management and Risk Management and ideally will have achieved the APMP qualification.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
  • Explain the essential principles of project risk management.
  • Explain the importance of risk management in projects and recognise the main areas of risk for typical projects.
  • Define and use the risk management process and define it's relationships with project management and decision making.
  • Undertake the Risk Level 1 Certificate exam having practised with sample questions.

Examinations

  • A 1 hour, closed book, multiple choice paper incorporating 100 questions with a pass mark of 60%.

Introductions and Expectations:

  • This session provides the opportunity to familiarise delegates with the course agenda and to clarify objectives.

Overview of Risk Management:

  • This session establishes some basic definitions and puts the management of risk into context.

Initiation:

  • The beginning of the process, defining the project from a risk perspective and focusing on how risk will be managed in the project.

Risk Identification:

  • This session looks at various methods which might be adopted in identifying project risk.

Risk Assessment:

  • This session looks at the dynamic and various nature of risks and evaluates them with respect to their likelihood and effects.

Treatment and Responses:

  • This session considers possible ways of dealing with risks and the integration of risk management into the project plan.

Rationale for Risk Analysis:

  • This considers the use of quantitative risk analysis and when it might be usefully employed.

Risk Modelling Basics:

  • Risk modelling (quantitative analysis) involves predicting outcomes in terms of time or cost. The typical output is a probabilistic/cumulative distribution. This session looks at the essentials of the modelling process.

Advanced Risk Modelling:

  • This session delves deeper into the characteristics of building a risk model.

Risk Analysis Tools:

  • This session examines the various tools and techniques which might be used during quantitative analysis (risk modelling).

Human Dimensions:

  • A look at the role of people in creating and dealing with risks in projects.

Managing Risk Effectively:

  • How to make it all work.
