Course Overview

The goal of this two-day course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to configure a Windows-based computer to operate in a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 networking infrastructure.

Skills Gained

Delegates will learn how to:

  • Describe the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol architecture
  • Convert Internet Protocol (IP) addresses between decimal and binary
  • Calculate a subnet mask
  • Create subnets
  • Configure a host to use a static IP address
  • Assign IP addresses in a multiple subnet network
  • Describe the IP routing process
  • Configure a host to obtain an IP address automatically
  • Configure a host so that automatic private IP address configuration is disabled
  • Configure a host to use name servers
  • Isolate common connectivity issues.

This course covers the subject areas covered in Microsoft Course MS2276.

Prerequisites

Before attending this course, students must have:

  • Course - Managing a Microsoft Windows server 2003 Environment, or have equivalent knowledge and skills.

  • Examine Networking Models
  • Monitor Network Connectivity

Assigning IP Addresses in a Multiple Subnet Network

  • Convert IP Address Number Schemes
  • Determine Valid IP Addresses
  • Calculate Custom Subnet Masks
  • Manage the Routing Table
  • Expand the IP Address Space

Configuring a Client IP Address

  • Assign a Static IP Address
  • Configure a Client for Dynamic IP Addressing
  • Configure a Client with an Alternate TCP/IP Configuration

Configuring a Client for Name Resolution

  • Examine the Name Resolution Process
  • Manage the ARP Cache
  • Configure Static NetBIOS Name Resolution
  • Configuring Static Host Name Resolution
  • Configure Dynamic Name Resolution
  • Examine the Windows Name Resolution Process

Isolating Common Connectivity Issues

  • Use Diagnostic Tools
