Course Overview

Knowing how much the project has achieved and spent compared to the plan is vital for effective decision taking. Earned Value gives a clear picture of current status and quickly highlights the areas that need management attention.

This 1-day course explores how to implement effective earned value management and uses simulations, case studies and exercises to explain earned value in every day terms.

Introduction

  • An opportunity to familiarise delegates with the course content and desired outcomes.

Overview of earned value management

  • In this session delegates consider the purpose of Earned Value.

What is earned value management?

  • An overview of earned value management and what it measures.

Prerequisites for earned value management

  • Delegates will consider what is required to make earned value management work including structured schedules, measuring progress and collecting costs.

Calculating earned value

  • In this session delegates will learn how to determine planned cost, earned value and actual cost.

Calculating performance metrics and forecasting

  • Consideration is given to the use of Earned Value to determine schedule performance and cost performance.

Earned value interpretation

  • This session provides the opportunity to fully understand how earned value can be used to establish the status of a project both in terms of cost and schedule.

Establishing a baseline

  • The importance of establishing robust baselines is considered.

Change control

  • Delegates will look at how to manage change. This includes consideration of responsibilities, processes and the impact on earned value measures.

Personal action planning

  • Finally delegates will be given the opportunity to consider how they will take forward learning points from the course.
