Course Overview

This course explores AIX tools for system optimisation, to analyse and tune performance, and apply appropriate performance policies. Previous system admin experience is assumed.

Audience

System Administrators responsible for the performance of AIX systems.

  • Describe how various AIX subsystems impact overall performance.

Prior system administration experience with AIX is assumed.

  • AIX System Administration I: Implementation (AU14GB)
  • AIX System Administration II: Problem Determination (AU16GB)

  • Overview of performance concepts
  • AIX performance analysis tools
  • The AIX scheduler and how to use it to avoid CPU bottlenecks
  • The AIX Virtual Memory Manager and how to modify its behaviour
  • AIX I/O subsystems
  • The use of LVM to maximise I/O performance
  • Factors affecting Network throughput, including NFS
  • Application tuning and the use of the trace tools
