Course Overview

This course is the first of two 5-day instructor-led courses for implementing and administering IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). In hands-on practice, you work with a data management strategy to perform the following tasks:

  • Install the TSM 6.1 server, TSM backup-archive client, and the Integrated Solution Console Administration Center.
  • Create and configure hierarchies of storage pools.
  • Define policies to manage the flow of data from disk to disk or tape media.
  • Back up and restore client data.
  • Archive and retrieve long-term and offsite data.
  • Automatically back up and restore the TSM databases and storage pools from off-site data storage pools.

The Student Exercises are available for Windows 2003. The lecture material covers all supported Intel and UNIX platforms.

Audience

This course is intended for system administrators and implementers who will be responsible for implementing an IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1 solution.

  • Unit 1: IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Overview (1 hour; no lab exercises)
  • Unit 2: Installing IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server and Client (2 hours; 8 lab exercises)
  • Unit 3: Administrative Interfaces and Privileges (3 hours; 16 lab exercises)

Day 2:

  • Unit 4: Storage Media Devices Introduction (1 hour; no lab exercises)
  • Unit 5: Managing Storage Pools and Storage Pool Volumes (3 hours; 11 lab exercises)
  • Unit 6: Policy Management (2 hours; 6 lab exercises)

Day 3:

  • Unit 7: Customizing the Tivoli Storage Manager Database and Recovery Log (2.5 hours; 12 lab exercises)
  • Unit 8: Client Configuration (3.5 hours; 15 lab exercises)

Day 4:

  • Unit 9: Backup-Archive Client Functions (3 hours; 21 lab exercises)
  • Unit 10: Protecting the Database and Storage Pools (3 hours; 7 lab exercises)

Day 5:

  • Unit 11: Automating Operations (2 hours; 13 lab exercises)
  • Unit 12: Monitoring and Event Logging (1.5 hour; 2 lab exercises)
  • Appendix A: Additional Product Information (1 hour; no lab exercises)
  • Appendix B: Problem Determination (1 hour; no lab exercises)
